New “eco-friendly” Welsh holiday village taking shape

The website www.ecofriendlytourist.com reports on a huge “eco-friendly” holiday village due to open soon in West Wales

A huge new holiday village boasting eco-friendly features is taking shape in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. Called Bluestone the 500 acre site will eventually comprise 335 timber lodges and 60 cottage and studio units in a forest setting. Leisure and activity facilities will include an all-weather water park, snow centre and sports club and there will also be a range of shops, restaurants and a pub.

The first phase including 186 log cabins is due to open in July 2008. Its backers say its design follows a typical Welsh village layout and that principles of sustainability are central to its ethos. In practice this entails measures that range from renewable energy - powering the site with biomass crops grown by local farmers - to employing environmental management policies which will enhance the local ecology by increasing both species and habitat.

The £60 million scheme near Narbeth has received multi-million pound grants from the Welsh Assembly and other bodies. Part of the land lies within the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. In its early stages Bluestone prompted a bitter battle over whether the development was desirable. Supporters argued it will bring jobs and a boost for the local economy whilst objectors said that it would cause serious harm to the Park’s natural environment.

The mastermind behind Bluestone is businessman William McNamara who created the nearby Oakwood theme park. He says Bluestone will be “a short-break destination like no other through a distinctive design that preserves the National Park’s identity and enhances its ecology.”

ecofriendlytourist.com plans to feature an update on Bluestone once it is ready to open to guests.
